So you want to go out on your own in the lash industry? Hereā€™s what you need to know.
May 22, 2024First off, congrats!
Going out on your own is going to be scary, it's going into the unknown and it's new so being scared is only natural. But the other side of that is, it's something new! How amazing is it that you are creating something out of nothing! And think about the journey you're about to embark on, everything you're going to learn, the relationships you will make and all the blessings your business is going to bring you. I'm cheering you on this brand new chapter and so I wanted to share some tips I learned along the way that will guarantee you start your business correctly to have a profitable and successful lash business. Most of the business side of things I learned through trial and error when starting my business when I was just 19, because unfortunately most of us don't get formal education on these VERY important topics. So I do my best to provide education to lash artists that is easily accessible so they can be the best lil lashpreneur's! I hope this blog can help you get clarity but please reach out if you need to discuss anything further, Enjoy!
- The first thing you need to do before you start your own business is SAVE money. Hustle hustle hustle. Starting a business isn’t cheap, so to avoid getting a loan and being in debt, work hard beforehand and put money into savings that you don’t touch. Then when it comes time to purchase your bed, light, business licenses, all the fees associated with starting out then you have no problem purchasing and can start your business out debt-free.
- Something that goes along with that, that I highly recommend starting in the beginning is a business bank account and a business credit card. All business costs will go on this credit card. Make sure to pay this off monthly using the money in your business bank account so you don't pay any interest. Doing this you will acquire cash back and bonuses and special discounts on purchases you’re already making. Work smarter not harder! My favorite business credit card is the chase sapphire it has many benefits that debit cards just don’t give you.

- Another huge thing is making sure you’re well-versed on how to legally open and run a business in your state. You may need to purchase a business license or pay other fees. And researching if you need to get your studio state-board approved before taking clients. These all should be simple google searches. If you are starting out in a home studio, I provide all state resources and other important info you'll need to know before getting started. Click here to read more about Luxury Home Salon Guide.
- Consult with a tax accountant/bookkeeper at the very beginning of your business. This will save you SO much time come tax season. Some entrepreneurs choose to pay someone to do their taxes while others prefer to do it themselves. Either way you go, still consult a professional to help you understand all the ins and outs to set your business up for success.
- Start your social media yesterday. Even if you’re in the very beginning stages of your lash career or even still in school. Building up a following as soon as possible will help you build your clientele asap. Post your work, updates, show up and build trust with your community. That way when you start your business and taking clients you’ll have a following that already knows you and will want to support you.
- If you are starting a professional beauty business at home (which is what I do) I created a step by step guide of everything you'll need to know when going through that process. Learn more.
A successful business doesn't just happen, but it's created. I hope these tips helped shed some clarity on things you need to think about when starting your lash business.
